On the fertile plains of the Ptuj field, a special variety has been growing for centuries, having become a symbol of the landscape, its people and their way of life \u2013 the Ptuj onion, the king of onions. Its story does not begin at the market or in the kitchen, but much earlier \u2013 in the soil shaped by the River Drava and the Pannonian plain sun.<\/strong>

In spring, life in the fields awakens once again. Farmers prepare the land, sow seeds, and with a great deal of knowledge and patience begin a new season. During this time, guests can learn the secrets of production, try their hand at planting, and discover why one of the most recognisable Slovenian agricultural stories is being created right here.

In summer, the Ptuj onion ripens. At that time, the scent of freshly pulled onions and the lively rhythm of the harvest join the Ptuj Plain. Visitors can step among the rows of onions, harvest their own produce, learn about the drying processes, and experience authentic rural life. This is a time when a harvest is born from the earth that will accompany many family tables throughout the year.

In late summer and autumn arrives the most recognisable moment of the tradition \u2013 manufacturing of onion garlands<\/strong>. Wreath making is more than just a craft; it is part of the cultural heritage of the Ptuj field, passed down from generation to generation. Under the guidance of locals, visitors can learn how to make their own wreath and take it home as a memento of the experience.

Autumn also brings a wealth of flavours. In culinary workshops, Ptuj onion is transformed into the main character of numerous dishes \u2013 from traditional Styrian recipes to modern gastronomic interpretations. We taste onion soups, flatbreads, chocolate pralines, sauces, jams and innovative products such as freeze-dried onion, onion powder and onion crisps.

Even in winter, the story does not die out. At that time, we learn about its role in folklore, traditional healing, and the everyday lives of our ancestors. Ptuj onion has always been valued for its natural qualities, nutritional value, and important place in home cooking.

From farm to plate, from seed to wreath, from tradition to modern flavours \u2013 the Ptuj onion connects people, landscape and heritage.<\/strong>

This is not just a farm visit. It is an experience of the Ptuj Plain through all the seasons, where visitors discover the authenticity of the countryside, create with their own hands, taste local delicacies and take a piece of the onion king's story with them.
